Course Description:
The Symposium is designed to provide a variety of learning experiences that will include topics such as: ECMO initiation in institutions that is not ECMO certified, the importance of team collaboration and communication to optimize patient outcomes, and management of complex patients requiring additional technological support. Symposium presenters will be local critical care experts from multiple disciplines including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists to provide an interprofessional perspective.

Learning Objectives
- Recognize patients who may be ECMO candidates and require a higher level of care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of prehospital care in patients who develop cardiac arrest.
- Identify patients who are ECMO candidates and execute the process for ECMO support.
- Argue and defend the use of targeted temperature management in post cardiac arrest patients
- Discuss the pros/cons of implementing targeted temperature management and the risks/benefits in patient outcomes
- Recognize medications that may sequester in the ECMO circuit
- Demonstrate understanding of how to appropriately sedate patients on ECMO without over sedating
- Implement the appropriate analgesia and sedation in ECMO patients and use clinical thinking strategies to understand why medications may not be working as we intended (medication sequestration)
- Discuss the differences between RN vs Perfusionist vs RT led ECMO
- Recognize the importance and need for TEE for resuscitation purposes in post cardiac arrest patients
