As such, speakers are bringing in their research and experiences on using machine learning/AI, data repository, etc. to enhance the practice environment. Symposium presenters will be local, national, and international critical care experts from multiple disciplines, including physicians, nurses, research scientists, and pharmacists. Healthcare trainees are encouraged to attend.
Target Audience
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Nurse, Registered (RN)
Pharmacists (PharmD)
Physicians (MD or DO)
Physician Assistant (PA)
Students of Health Professions
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:
1. Define data science and summarize how it is utilized in the care of critically ill patients.
2. Describe current and developing ‘wear-able’ technology used in the care of critically ill patients.
3. Consider the data on associated outcomes of family presence in the ICU.
4. Identify the basic principles underlying supervised machine learning.
5. Recognize the pitfalls associated with various commonly used performance metrics.
6. Describe the different types of multimodal brain monitoring and what information they contribute.
7. Review the challenges encountered with the large amounts of data that are collected from the multimodal monitoring.
8. Evaluate the interim success of the SCCM Data Science Campaign.
9. Describe the benefits of a national Clinical Quality Registry for ICU research and performance improvement.
10. Summarize data science in military and civilian collection during times of conflict and in various zones of conflict.
11. Explore the need for and use of today's technology in caring for the wounded when resources are limited.
12. Discuss the value of predicting time to death after withdrawal after life sustaining therapy.
13. Identify the stakeholders in organ donation after circulatory determination of death (DCDD).
14. Explain the rationale for both temporal and external validation of a machine learning model.

Aaron Boussina, faculty for this presentation, has a financial relationship as an employee with Healcisio, a company that makes AI algorithms for predictive analytics (e.g., early sepsis detection) for electronic health records. Since the ACCME considers electronic health record companies as eligible for accredited continuing education, no mitigation was deemed necessary.
JP Cobb, faculty for this presentation, has stock options in data science and medical library start-ups: GibLib, Akido & Bauhealth. These financial relationships were deemed to be eligible for CE and thus there was no need for mitigation determined.
No one else involved in the planning or presentation of this educational activity have any relevant financial relationship(s) to disclose with ineligible companies whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients.
