Meredith Winter, MD
Dr. Winter is a pediatric intensivist and palliative care physician at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). She completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, followed by Critical Care fellowship at CHLA. Her primary area of research is in the application of data science to end-of-life care and clinical outcomes in the pediatric intensive care unit. She has worked closely with the data science team at CHLA to develop machine learning models that predict time to death after terminal extubation to enhance family counseling and identify candidates for organ donation after cardiac death. She is the Principal Investigator for the Death One Hour After Terminal Extubation (DONATE) Study, a multicenter validation study for these models. For this work, she was awarded the inaugural Lauren Marsillio-Craney Lectureship in Pediatric Critical Care Data Science and the Early-Stage Researcher Award at Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress. Her other projects make use of large databases and area-based social determinants of health indices to study clinical outcomes and family decision-making. She has specialized training in bioethics and communication training and serves on the Donor Council at CHLA.
