0467_SRMC_Teaching Surgical Skills to Fluency Using Positive Reinforcement_Live
Description:
To achieve fluency in a skill, it must be executed at the pace demanded by its environment. Developing a complex, fluent skill requires first establishing a solid foundation of simpler, fundamental skills. This means focusing on teaching the basic tool skills before moving on to more intricate procedures. Creative and challenging learning platforms play a crucial role in this process by allowing for detailed task analysis and the application of operant conditioning principles, such as positive reinforcement. By providing meaningful repetition and rewarding progress, these platforms help maintain engagement for both the learner and teacher. This presentation describes how we did it and how we assessed our results so that it used in a variety of teaching environments.
Target Audience
Physicians (MD or DO)
Students of Health Professions
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:
1) Design teaching strategies to build on foundation skills that will then lead to competency in more complex fluent skills.
2) Apply these methods effectively in various teaching environments and assess the results to ensure the skills are being developed fluently.
3) Predict the speed required for the skill is to be performed in its intended environment to be considered fluent.
