Castro Valley, CA US

Description:

This 8-hour trauma class is intended for all Registered Nurses. Lecture with interactive Q&A and case study discussions will focus on trauma assessment, hemorrhagic shock, the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patient, management of spinal cord injuries (SCI), respiratory care of the SCI patient, solid organ injuries, nutrition and wound care in trauma patients, coagulopathy in trauma, and nursing care of the polytrauma patient. An update on Eden’s Trauma Program will also be provided. The learner will be given resources for a trauma-informed approach to care and practices— to be able to facilitate culturally and linguistically appropriate care free of implicit bias. The goal of this class will be to provide the nurses with information on trauma nursing assessment, protocols, patient management, communication skills, evidence-based practices, and psychological aspects to be utilized in practice.

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Other Licensed Healthcare Workers

Learning Objectives

After Attending this Activity, Learners Should be Able to:

  • Recognize the components of the initial assessment. Understand the difference between the primary survey & secondary survey.
  • Understand that primary survey identifies potential life-threatening injuries.
  • Appreciate that the secondary survey can be fluid & at times must be completed in the ICU setting. Appreciate the need to “look, listen & feel” throughout most all systems in order to identify all possible injuries.
  • Understand the importance of stating all injuries with needed interventions while working through the systems to ensure complete diagnostics.
  • Recognize that the trauma survey is not just an ER survey. It is crucial that critical care nurses be able replicate these surveys upon admission.
