During this full-day, in-person event, nursing professionals will attend presentations on the evolving standards of nursing practice. The sessions will cover best practices for integrating guidelines, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration at the SHSO Scope of Practice Education Day. Topics will include APC Privileging & Standardized Procedures, Patient Consent, Delegation & Supervision, Medicare Billing, Medication Mixing, and the Surgical Environment.

Full Day Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and analyze current topics and emerging trends affecting scope of practice across various healthcare professions, including new regulations, evolving roles, and changes in healthcare delivery models that impact professional responsibilities and boundaries.
2. Evaluate the implications of these topics on clinical practice, including how changes in scope of practice affect patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the professional development of healthcare providers.
3. Develop strategies for adapting to and complying with evolving scope of practice standards, including best practices for integrating new guidelines into daily practice, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, and addressing challenges and opportunities presented by these changes.
Subtopic Learning Objectives
Medicare Billing
1. Define the scope of practice for various healthcare professionals concerning Medicare billing, including roles and responsibilities for accurate billing and claims submission based on their specific professional credentials.
2. Review Medicare policies, including coverage rules, billing practices, and documentation requirements, and understand how to ensure compliance with these regulations within the context of different professional scopes of practice.
3. Develop and apply strategies to ensure effective and compliant delivery of Medicare services, including accurate billing.
APC Privileging / Standardized Procedures
1. Review the concepts of privileging and standardized procedures for advanced practice clinicians (APCs), including how these processes establish and define the scope of practice for various APC roles, such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical nurse specialists.
2. Discuss the regulatory requirements and institutional standards governing the privileging process and development of standardized procedures, including how to align these with state laws and professional guidelines to ensure compliance and enhance clinical practice.
3. Develop strategies for implementing and managing effective privileging and standardized procedures, including the assessment and evaluation of APC competencies, the process for credentialing, and how to maintain and update privileges in response to evolving roles and clinical needs.
Consent
1. Investigate and differentiate between informed consent, implied consent, and explicit consent, and understand their appropriate applications in clinical settings.
2. Analyze how scope of practice boundaries affects consent procedures for different healthcare roles, including the delegation of consent responsibilities.
3. Define the scope of practice for various healthcare professionals concerning patient consent, including the legal and ethical limits of each role in obtaining and documenting consent.
Medication Mixing
1. Identify and explain California state regulations and guidelines governing the practice of medication mixing, including those set by the California Board of Pharmacy and relevant health care authorities.
2. Differentiate roles and responsibilities of various healthcare professionals involved in medication mixing, including pharmacists, nurses, and other licensed practitioners, and how these roles intersect with scope of practice regulations.
3. Explain how scope of practice limitations affects the mixing of medications and what specific activities are permitted or restricted for various healthcare professionals.
Delegation and Supervision
1. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of various healthcare professionals concerning the editing of EHRs, including which professionals are authorized to make changes, updates, or corrections within the EHR based on their scope of practice and clinical responsibilities.
2. Develop and apply best practices for updating EHRs, including how to manage changes, corrections, and additions to patient records while ensuring data integrity and minimizing errors.
3. Formulate methods for effective collaboration among healthcare professionals using the EHR, including how to coordinate and share information while respecting each role's scope of practice.

1. Define the scope of practice for various healthcare professionals involved in surgical procedures, including surgeons, surgical assistants, nurses, and other team members, highlighting their specific roles and responsibilities within the surgical environment.
2. Distinguish and apply the relevant regulations, standards, and institutional protocols that govern surgical procedures, including patient consent, preoperative and postoperative care, and documentation requirements to ensure compliance and patient safety.
3. Identify and manage the limitations and boundaries of individual scopes of practice in the surgical context, including how to handle situations where tasks may fall outside one's authorized scope, and strategies for effective collaboration within the surgical team.
