0416_SHVGR_Gestational Diabetes in a Nutshell_Live
Description:
Management of gestational diabetes (GDM) aims to keep blood glucose levels in the recommended range during pregnancy. This can prevent problems during birth and also helps reduce the baby's risk of being overweight in childhood and developing type 2 diabetes later in life. This virtual grand round session will address the preconceptions and misconceptions of appropriate body weight for women who are at risk for GMD. It will cover symptoms and causes, diagnosis, management and treatment options during and after pregnancy for long term improved health outcomes for both mother and child.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity learners will be able to:
• Summarize the diagnostic criteria for gestational diabetes mellitus.
• Examine the long-term implications of GDM for mother and baby.
• Discuss with pregnant individuals, or those considering pregnancy in the future, the importance of appropriate body weight to reduce risk for GDM as well as long term risk for metabolic dysfunction/type 2 diabetes.
• Evaluate the appropriateness of recommending pregnancy-carbohydrate mediation versus restriction.
