0327_SHVGR_ Human Trafficking_Live
Human trafficking, including the recruitment, harboring, and transportation of an individual who is often induced by fraud, force, or coercion to perform forced labor or commercial sex acts is a highly prevalent problem with an estimated number of victims approaching 28 million worldwide, yet California does not currently regulate anti-trafficking education for healthcare professionals leading many clinicians to remain unaware of the extent and impact of this problem. To quantify this practice gap, a recent survey demonstrated that less than 10% of clinicians suspected they had every treated a victim of human trafficking and yet national surveys indicate that 64 to 87% of trafficking survivors reported accessing healthcare services at least once while being trafficked. Further, more 70% of clinicians indicated that they would not know what to do if they knowingly encountered a victim of sex trafficking. In this presentation, faculty will discuss guidelines on how healthcare providers can identify potential human trafficking victims, complete mandated reporting, and apply a trauma-informed approach to assist trafficking victims.
