Course Description:

The Roots of Bioethics program intends to highlight several of the individuals who worked with Dr. Albert Jonsen in the early years of the field. We will explore how their germinal ideas have developed over time and influenced our perspectives in bioethics. Today's program focuses on a topic that has universal relevance – Courage presented by Dr. Ruth Purtilo, Professor Emerita of the Department of Physical Therapy and Interdisciplinary Studies at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Purtilo’s early visits to South Africa started her on a lifelong journey allowing her to both experience and, better understand the concept of Moral Courage. She will be joined by the Program’s Senior Bioethicist, Mr. Robert Fulbright JD who discuss how moral courage manifests in the hospital setting. Dr. William Andereck, PMHV's Medical Director, will moderate this conversation on Moral Courage.
