William Andereck, MD
William S. Andereck, MD, FACP, is an Internist and the Medical Director of Sutter Health's Program in Medicine and Human Values (PMHV). He has also chaired the hospital’s Ethics Committee since its inception in 1985.
Dr. Andereck received his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1974. He served his internship and residency at San Francisco’s California Pacific Medical Center. He returned to Vanderbilt in 1978 for a NEH fellowship in Medical Ethics. In 1979, Dr. Andereck began the private practice of Internal Medicine in San Francisco and has continued to combine his ethics work with a busy clinical practice ever since.
Since 1979, Dr. Andereck has been active in the medical community in a variety of ways. He served as a Trustee of the California Medical Association from 2003 to 2009. He served as a member, chair, and eventually consultant, to its Council on Ethical Affairs from the early 90’s until 2011. For over ten years he was consistently elected to the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Medical Society. He also served two terms as Editor of the Medical Society’s monthly magazine, San Francisco Medicine. He has published in both the medical literature and the lay press and is called on as a commentator by the media. Since 1985, Dr. Andereck has published and edited Hotline, a newsletter for physicians dealing with managed care contracting. He also edits, “Ethical Times”, the quarterly journal of the Program in Medicine and Human Values with the PMHV Program Director, Dr. Ruchika Mishra and is a member of the editorial board of the Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics.
