0151_CPMC_Bioethics Workshop_Vulnerable Patients: How to Address Ethical Issues and Respect Diverse Values_Live
Sutter Health will be hosting its 18th annual bioethics workshop. This in-person workshop will focus on exploring the ethics of caring for vulnerable patients. The sessions will use clinical cases to address frequently encountered ethical issues in complex patient care situations related to treatment decision making for this patient population. The Program in Medicine and Human Values professional bioethics team will share strategies and best practices to problem solve these specific cases. The workshop will utilize teaching methodology such as case-based discussions, applicable law, and through skills training for healthcare professionals and hospital ethics committee members.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Summarize changes and additions of the California Medical Surrogate Appointment law.
2. Demonstrate skills needed to conduct an effective family meeting.
3. Describe steps needed to identify unrepresented patients and recommended processes for making appropriate treatment decisions.
4. Apply objective criteria in preparation for making difficult medical treatment decisions.
5. Discuss ethical obligations of patients who frequently leave against medical advice.
6. Explain the need for communication and coordination when there are delayed discharges.
7. Outline key components of a well written ethics chart note.
