Nnamdi Orakpo, MD, PhD
Nnamdi Orakpo, MD, PhD is a dynamic and compassionate bilingual Sleep Medicine and Interventional Psychiatrist dedicated to improving the quality of life for older adults. Originally drawn to basketball, Dr. Orakpo's path shifted towards academia and healthcare, where he discovered a profound passion for gerontology.
After completing his doctorate in Gerontology at the University of North Texas, Dr. Orakpo pursued medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine in Mexico. He honed his clinical skills at Sinai at Jackson Park Hospital on the Southside of Chicago, where he was mentored by the late Dr. Carl Bell, and graduating in 2016.
A pioneer in the field, Dr. Orakpo spearheaded a groundbreaking clinical trial investigating the efficacy of Virtual Reality Neurofeedback (VR) as a novel adjunct to cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with chronic centralized (CBT-CP) pain and insomnia (CBT-I). His innovative research, funded by an institutional grant at Garnet Health Medical Center, in New York, has positioned him as a leading expert in the field.
Dr. Orakpo's commitment to advancing the understanding of sleep disorders is evident in his extensive academic contributions. He has published articles in prestigious journals such as SLEEP, Frontiers Journal of Psychiatry, and Frontiers Journal of Human Neuroscience. Additionally, he has collaborated with Stanford University colleagues on a comprehensive textbook on clinical sleep medicine, authoring chapters on a range of sleep disorders, like Isolated Sleep Paralysis, Exploding Head Syndrome, Sexsomnia, Enuresis, and Propiospinal Myoclonus at Sleep onset.
Beyond his clinical practice and research, Dr. Orakpo is an active member of professional organizations such as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the California Sleep Society, and the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS). His unwavering dedication to patient care and his belief in the power of compassion and service align with the philosophy of the Buddha, inspiring him to make a positive impact on the lives of those he serves.
