0493_SMMC_The ‘Teachable Moment’ - How to Give Feedback During Clinical Care_Live
Description:
Sutter Gould Medical Group and Sutter Health Foundation have identified the need to enhance clinician recruitment and retention. Among the multi-prong initiatives to do this, student teaching by interested group members is seen to return joy to mid-career clinicians, as well as expose early professional trainees to the Sutter brand and organizational advantages. The Undergraduate Medical Education Department is tasked with encouraging clinician preceptors, and to enhance their sense of effectiveness by supporting professional development. This live CME course provides practical teaching skills to our interprofessional clinicians, including giving feedback, efficient precepting during clinical practice, time management, and documentation tips and tricks. Learners will be encouraged to participate in interactive discussions with a panel of Medical Students to hear about features that make for great clinical learning and to establish mentor relationships with students from the surrounding medical schools and allied health professions training programs.

Learning Objectives
After this activity, learners should be able to:
- Encourage skill development for teaching medical and PA/NP students. At the end of this activity the learner will be able to:
- List characteristics of effective feedback.
- List the developmental stages of medical learners to independent practice.
- Describe traditional versus situated approaches to feedback
- Use set up, feedback, action plan, summarize, and structure to frame feedback
- Identify the resources available at Sutter Health to support precepting medical learners
- Review a copy of the SMG preceptor manual as well as online teaching resources to continue their preceptor development.
- Connect skilled preceptors with medical learners, as measured by increased learner satisfaction scores from medical schools and APC training programs.
