Between 1999 and 2020, more than 800,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, and escalating rates of drug addiction have contributed to recent decreases in life expectancy. In the US, less than 20% of patients who have a substance use disorder access evidence-based treatment for their disorder and people who feel more stigmatized are less likely to seek treatment. Access to care means that patients have timely, equitable, humane, effective, affordable, and safe treatment options that utilize evidence-based practices. The goal of this presentation is to provide mental health care teams with best practice strategies to reduce stigma against substance use disorder patients and thus improve access to high-quality, evidence-based addiction prevention and treatment programs for our patients.

Learning Objectives
After Attending this Activity, Learners Should be Able to:
1. Identify assumptions and beliefs about individuals with a substance use disorder that may lead to barriers in care.
2. Practice use of destigmatizing language by using person-first language, which focuses on the person—not their illness.
3. Integrate best practices for person-centered care, compassionate care for individuals suffering from addiction to enhance the quality of care and support the likelihood of participation in treatment.
