Barbara Welton, RN, MSN Ed., CNS

I started at Sutter Health in 1989 as a Pediatric Staff Nurse at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento. I became a charge nurse after 9 months and later received my chemotherapy certification which enabled me to care for Pediatric Oncology patients. While I was still a staff nurse on the Pediatrics floor, I went back to Sac State (CSUS) and completed my MSN and CNS program with an emphasis in Pediatric Oncology and Case Management (Graduated in 2005). I also started teaching in the Sacramento City College Extended Campus Nursing Program and later became the lead coordinator for the whole program. In 2016, I was asked to design a Nurse Residency Program for the Sutter Health Organization under the Nurse Workforce and Talent Development team led by Christine Cress at Sutter Health University. My first cohort of the Sutter Health Nurse Residency Program (SHNRP) started in March 2017, and we have since had almost 1400 nurses start the program from every acute care area across the Sutter Health system. I went back to school at the University of Phoenix in 2016 to complete my Post-Master's Certification Program in Nursing Education, and completed it in 2017.
As the lead of the Sutter Health Nurse Residency Program, I plan for, develop and validate content for the program; facilitate content and activities in the classroom; coordinate and lead clinical skills stations; and coordinate and lead simulation activities with debriefing per standards developed by Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice - INACSL. I now manage large groups of up to 50 of new acute care nurses who start the program almost once a month in a calendar year. I also coordinate resources needed to facilitate multiple cohorts of new nurses who are attending scheduled program days ("Sessions") once a quarter simultaneously at different points in their journey through the program. This includes mentoring and managing multiple nurse educators to assist in the program. I also review feedback from the nurses, educators and stakeholders to update content and skills to reflect current best practices in our organization.
