Mary Spelis, RN, MS, NPD-BC
Mary serves as the Clinical Nurse Educator for the Cardiac Care, Cardiac Progressive Care, and Cardiovascular Interventional Units at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. As a member of the Education & Training Team at SMCS, she is passionate about facilitating the development of the nursing healthcare team so that they can provide excellent care to our community. She has 38 years of healthcare experience including outpatient and acute settings.
Mary joined SMCS as a new graduate RN in 1997 and quickly demonstrated her aptitude and love for teaching. Within a couple of years of being on the telemetry staff, she was acting as charge nurse, preceptor, and mentor to peers. By 2005 Mary advanced to her current position as Clinical Educator, eventually taking on three inpatient units. The most gratifying and rewarding part of her work is being able to teach something that will help nurses be the best caregivers they can be. Her hope is that she inspires others to do the same, and to recognize the influence that "educators" can have on community health.
Her education includes a Baccalaureate degree (biology) from the College of William & Mary in Virginia (1985) and a Master's degree (Nursing Science and Healthcare Leadership) form UC Davis with their inaugural MS/PhD nursing program cohort (2012). In 2015 Mary achieved specialty certification in Nursing Professional Development being the first to accomplish this at SMCS. Now a board-certified Nursing Professional Development Specialist (NPD-BC) she is an ardent supporter of this and other specialty certifications, recognizing the benefits this can have on patient care.
Mary has been a committed supporter of the American Heart Association's women's initiative, Go Red for Women, organizing hospital awareness events on National Wear Red Day every year since 2004.
