Overview
Description:
Hospitalized patients experiencing severe hypoglycemia and/or hyperglycemia events have increased mortality, length of stay, infection rates, and adverse complications. Severe hypoglycemia and severe hyperglycemia are two measures that are added to the quality measures of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2025. Studies showed that implementing an inpatient standardized glycemic control protocol improves patient outcomes and increase adherence to meet the CMS quality measures. This grand rounds lecture serves to address the need to implement glycemic control protocols in all patient care departments and not just the ICU. This is a system-wide protocol, beginning at SRMC and expanding through SMCS with the hope of extending to all Sutter Health hospitals.
