Overview

Description: 

Stress ulcer prophylaxis is critical in critically ill adults to prevent stress ulcers and upper GI bleeding, reduce complications, and improve overall patient outcomes. The decision to initiate SUP should be based on the patient’s risk factors, clinical condition, and the likelihood of developing stress ulcers. This grand rounds discussion will provide updates to the SCCM and ASHP Guidelines for the Prevention of Stress-Related Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Critically Ill Adults.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

1) Identify updated risks factors for stress-related upper GI bleeds based on updated studies and systemic reviews

2) Identify subgroups of critically ill patients who may benefit from pharmacologic stress ulcer prophylaxis

3) Describe the role of pharmacological stress ulcer prophylaxis in the setting of enteral nutrition

4) Identify patients and indications that may benefit from continuation of acid suppression therapy
