The Roots of Bioethics program intends to highlight several of the individuals who worked with Dr. Albert Jonsen in the early years of the field. We will explore how their germinal ideas have developed over time and influenced our perspectives in bioethics. Today's program focuses on a topic that has universal relevance – Medical Decision Making for those who lack the capacity to do so on their own.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Describe how to assess a patient's medical decision-making capacity
2. Identify bioethical standards for deciding for others (particularly substituted judgment and best interest)
3. Identify limitations of those bioethical standards when applied to real-life clinical situations
