Tongue Tie

0469_PAMF_Ankyloglossia and Frenotomies Understanding and Managing Tongue-Tie in Clinical Practice_Live

October 31, 2024

Description:

With breastfeeding rates on the rise, tongue-tie has become an increasingly prevalent issue among new parents. However, the surge in frenotomies has raised concerns about the necessity and frequency of these procedures. Providers are often performing frenotomies without a thorough understanding of the proper diagnostic and treatment steps of tongue-tie. This course aims to provide learners with a thorough understanding of ankyloglossia, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive evaluation before recommending a tongue-tie release. This talk will also cover latest clinical report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) and frenotomies. AAPs report revealed that there is a physician lack in knowledge on when frenotomies are appropriate given the individualized care plan. Regarding tongue-ties, the presentation will an include an introduction to ankyloglossia, definition, anatomy, and clinical significance. Learners will gain insights into the latest findings and recommendations from the AAP’s clinical report. There will be a focus on the assessment and diagnosis of ankyloglossia, providing tools and techniques for accurate evaluation. This talk will address the breastfeeding dyad, highlighting the importance of evaluating both mother and infant before considering any intervention. Regarding frenotomy procedures, the presentation will review and discuss indications, techniques, and outcomes. By the end of the session, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of ankyloglossia and frenotomies and be equipped with the knowledge to make more informed decisions in their practice addressing tongue-ties.
