0420_SHVGR_Prescription Drug Overuse_Live

October 30, 2024

Description:

Opioids are widely prescribed in a variety of settings for the treatment of both acute and chronic pain. No widely accepted guidelines recommend the use of opioids as a first-line therapy for the management of chronic non-cancer pain. Despite the lack of evidence supporting the practice, however, providers continue to prescribe opioids for extended periods. This lecture will address practice gaps including insufficient pain management education, lack of comprehensive risk assessment from those prescribing medication, limited patient education, poor communication and collaboration amongst care teams as well as liimited access to alternative, non-pharmacological treatments.
