Description:
Pharmacogenetics is the study of how an individual's genetic make-up affects one's response to different medications. Knowledge of a patient's genetic profile may help providers determine an appropriate drug or dose. By utilizing PGx, clinicians are guided in personalized prescribing of medications to improve efficacy or prevent side effects.
Target Audience
Nurse, Registered (RN)
Physicians (MD or DO)
Psychologists
Other Healthcare Professionals
Students of Health Professions
Learning Objectives
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
1. Overview of pharmacogenomics (PGx) as a precision medicine approach
• Define basic genomic and phenotypic terminologies.
• Explain general pharmacogenomic concepts.
• Describe basic pharmacogenomic testing methods.
2. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) and its impact in Mental Health’s therapeutic decision-making
• Discuss the rationale for using PGx to optimize medication use.
• Identify key concepts and resources that enable PGx as a decision support tool in prescribing medications.
• Describe the most common pharmacogenes involved in the Mental Health
3. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) resources and methodologies for validation of recommended drug and dosing selection
• Illustrate the process to assess clinical actionability of specific gene-drug pairs using medical evidence.
• Recite the appropriate frameworks to evaluate PGx information.
• Paraphrase the various PGx evidence-based guidelines and resources.
4. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) implementation in clinical settings
• Explain the importance of informatics to support the implementation of PGx in clinical practice through clinical decision support.
• Illustrate the challenges in incorporating PGx in clinical practice.
• Identify strategies for implementing pharmacogenomics in an academic medical center.
• Share lessons learned in implementing PGx program at the US Department of Veterans Affairs
