0375_SHSO_Navigating the Neurons: Understanding TMS_Live
Description:
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that involves using a magnetic coil to influence your brain’s natural electrical activity. Cultural attitudes towards mental health and the stigmas surrounding it may prevent individuals from seeking treatment. Socioeconomic factors may also impact access to TMS treatment, such as financial constraints or lack of insurance coverage. It is very important to instruct patient populations to help destigmatize mental health conditions and encourage seeking help. This presentation will engage the organization and its providers to raise awareness about TMS and mental health treatment options.
Target Audience
Nurse, Registered (RN)
Physicians (MD or DO)
Psychologists

Students of Health Professions
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
1. Review Transcranial Magnetic Simulation (TMS) as a treatment option for depression, including its mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety profile.
2. Identify appropriate TMS candidates by considering indications and contraindications including treatment resistance, medication intolerance, or preference for non-pharmacological interventions.
3. Educate patients on potential benefits and risks of TMS, address patient concerns, and the role of the multidisciplinary team.
4. Support shared decision making and goal concordant care via comprehensive patient evaluations and tailored treatment plans that include TMS as a treatment option when appropriate.
