Description:
Ulcerations associated with diabetes are the most common cause of foot ulcers. Most of these ulcers are a direct result of loss of sensation secondary to peripheral neuropathy. Approximately 15% of persons with diabetes will develop foot ulceration during their lifetime. Most lower extremity amputations in the United States are preceded by a foot ulcer. Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of ulcer care. Misdiagnosis may result in mismanagement, with failure to heal, and may even have devastating consequences. This presentation will compare & contrast clinical versus surgical procedures as different options for patients dealing with lower extremity ulcerations related to diabetes.
