Course Description:
When evaluating the febrile young infant, the goal is to identify infants who are at high risk for invasive bacterial infection (IBI; ie, bacteremia and/or meningitis) or serious viral infection (eg, herpes simplex virus [HSV] infection) and who therefore require comprehensive evaluation. The goal of this activity is to provide the pediatric team with information and resources to reduce unnecessary tests and invasive procedures on well-appearing febrile neonates.

1. Discuss the changing bacteriology of UTI, bacteremia, and meningitis in young infants.
2. Review the evidence base of key recommendations in the AAP Febrile Infant Guidelines.
3. Demonstrate application of the guidelines in 3 age groups.
