Course Description: 

This 2-day course was designed to educate maternity nursing staff to implement the 10 successful steps of breastfeeding as outlined by Baby Friendly USA to meet the criteria and competencies required by WHO and UNICEF. Staff will be given sufficient knowledge, competence, and skills to support breastfeeding from delivery of the infant to discharge. Didactic, hands-on skills, case studies, competency questions, and teach backs will be used to solidify concepts and demonstrate retention of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

1. Appraise compliance with the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes in one's health facility.

2. Explain a facility’s infant feeding policies and monitoring systems.

3. Demonstrate listening and learning skills whenever engaging in a conversation with a mother about infant feeding.

4. Use skills for building confidence and giving support whenever engaging in a conversation with a mother regarding infant feeding.

5. Recommend immediate and uninterrupted skin-to skin.

6. Prioritize breastfeeding within the first hour, according to feeding cues.

7. Discuss with a mother how breastfeeding works.

8. Support mothers getting a baby to latch using a variety of positions and techniques.

9. Educate mothers on how to identify and respond to feeding cues, manage milk expression, breastfeed a low-birth-weight or sick baby, and prevent or resolve difficulties with breastfeeding.

10. Apply strategies to help a mother whose baby needs fluid other than breast milk or a mother who is not feeding her baby directly at the breast.

11. Prepare families for discharge by providing resources for additional education and support related to infant feeding.
