Course Description

Literature shows that gender inequity is common in medical science and healthcare, which has historically focused on male patients and providers. Women's health promotion is often limited in scope to sexual or reproductive issues and research is lacking in how gender differences can impact healthcare delivery and overall wellbeing, resulting in longer times for diagnosis and more unhealthy years in comparison to aging men.

The sociocultural aspects of health are further amplified by a lack of gender inequity in healthcare leadership. Additionally, traits associated with femininity, such as empathy, mutual connection, and emotional intelligence that have been shown to promote patient healing and collaborative team environments are often downplayed in importance in modern healthcare. Ongoing support of professional development of women in healthcare represents a critical need to address practice gaps related to gender inequity and to promote "feminine" values that are now known to be an essential feature of quality health care and a cornerstone of medical ethics. The Women's Inclusion Interest Group Community of Interest of Sutter is presenting this inaugural Women’s Symposium, “Women Making History" to address these practice gaps and support women in their professional development.
