0038_SHSO_Practices to Engage Patients: Health Literacy and Teach-Back_EM
Course Description
Presentation designed to increase awareness of the limited health literacy in the adult population, the consequences of limited literacy, and methods to improve patient health literacy. Reducing medical jargon, providing health information in plain language, and using the teach-back method during patient instruction will be presented along with opportunities to practice competencies acquired.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
1. Define health literacy.
2. Summarize prevalence and consequences of low health literacy.
3. Apply the Universal Precautions approach to health literacy.
4. Demonstrate competence with the use health literate stoplight tools when educating patients about their condition or symptom management.
5. Describe how stoplight tool used by clinicians working throughout the Sutter Health system facilitates a standardized approach to patient education.
6. Engage patients and families with the teach-back method according to best practice recommendations.
