Edward Marcantonio, MD, MSc
Dr. Edward Marcantonio is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and serves as Section Chief for Research in the Division of General Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), where he leads the Division’s Aging Research Program. A board certified internist and geriatrician, Dr. Marcantonio is a physician scientist and thought leader in the field of delirium, a common, morbid and costly condition in hospitalized older adults. Dr. Marcantonio is also an active clinician and leads the geriatric cognitive consultation clinic in the Senior Health (Gerontology) practice at BIDMC.
Dr. Marcantonio has conducted multiple major observational and intervention studies to improve identification of delirium, target individuals at risk, identify modifiable risk factors, and test intervention strategies to reduce the incidence, severity and duration of delirium. His translational research interests include biomarker discovery for delirium, the role of inflammation and stress in the pathophysiology of delirium, and shared mechanisms of delirium and dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. He has published nearly 300 peer-reviewed papers, which have been cited over 35,000 times.
Dr. Marcantonio has mentored over 70 students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty from multiple disciplines. He has received numerous awards for mentoring including the HMS A. Clifford Barger Award, and currently holds a Mid-Career Mentoring Award in Patient-Oriented Research from the National Institute on Aging. He has received the Paul Beeson Physician Scholarship, the American Geriatrics Society Outstanding Scientific Achievement in Clinical Investigation Award, and is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians.
