Yu Kawai, MD
Dr. Yu Kawai is an assistant professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and is the Quality Medical Director and an intensivist in the pediatric ICU and the cardiovascular surgery ICU. He completed an internal medicine and pediatrics residency and a pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan. Since accepting a position at the Mayo Clinic in 2016, he has been involved in multi-site QI initiatives. Notably, he was the site PI for the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Pediatric ICU Liberation Collaborative. He was also a member of the SCCM ICU Liberation Committee. Locally, he leads the Pediatric Delirium Team and the Early Mobility Team. He has developed a pediatric delirium management and prevention bundle called the Bundle to Eliminate Delirium (BED) to mitigate the iatrogenic and reversible drivers of delirium. His recent publications focus on reducing ICU noise pollution with the use of the BED as well as the positive association between ICU noise pollution and the prevalence of pediatric delirium.
