Babar Khan, MD, MS
I am the Section Chief of Critical Care Medicine and a Professor of Medicine in the division of Pulmonary/Critical Care, Allergy and Occupational Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. My vision and passion are to improve brain health and recovery among critically ill patients. Hence, my research focuses on delirium or acute brain failure in the intensive care unit (ICU); and the long-term complications emanating from an ICU stay. The goal of my research is to develop innovative translational and interventional strategies to identify, prevent and treat delirium in the ICU; and to enhance recovery from the long-term cognitive, physical, and psychological sequelae of critical illness, now recognized as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS).
I have established myself as an independent investigator of sustained regional, national, and international repute. I have obtained 3 NIH-funded R01s as PI, 5 NIH R01s as Co-I, and 8 internal/industry sponsored grants as PI . I published over 100 scientific manuscripts. I mentored >20 residents, fellows, post-docs, and junior faculty scientists. My mentees have been recipients of local and national funding awards (K23, F32, internal/foundational grants), national research accolades from scientific organizations and have published multiple manuscripts as lead authors. I have given numerous invited presentations at National and International forums and my work has been cited in national news outlets such as CNN. I served as the president of the American Delirium Society, a national organization, reviewed for high impact journals and have been a regular member on NIH study section. My research work has been translated into clinical practice impacting lives of thousands of ICU patients and ICU survivors.
