Michael Devinney, MD, PhD
Dr. Mike Devinney is an assistant professor and critical care physician-scientist in the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 2006, followed by obtaining his PhD in neuroscience and his MD through the University of Wisconsin Medical Scientist Training Program in 2015. He subsequently completed Anesthesiology residency and Critical Care Fellowship at Duke University and then joined faculty at Duke as Assistant Professor in July, 2020. His work uses translational neuroscience approaches, including cerebrospinal fluid molecular assays, to identify mechanisms of postoperative delirium. His current work has found that increased blood-brain barrier dysfunction is associated with postoperative delirium, and future work aims to determine what inflammatory mediators actually cross the disrupted blood-brain barrier to potentially drive delirium. He is also interested in how perioperative sleep enhancement could protect the blood-brain barrier and prevent postoperative delirium.
