Mitchel Erickson, DNP, MS, BSN, BSc
Dr. Mitchel Erickson is a board-certified acute care nurse practitioner who practiced as an emergency medicine provider for 25 years with prior clinical positions as a hospitalist and primary care provider. He has filled several leadership roles. He was the first to develop the role of UCSF Health’s Chief of Advanced Practice overseeing 600 APPs and the first to Chair the California Board of Registered Nursing’s Advanced Practice RN Advisory Committee. His role as Chief helped mobilize advanced practice leadership across all University of California health systems to address common practice and administrative optimization. At UCSF Health he focused on APP onboarding for newly hired APPs to address provider attrition and engagement and published the data in 2023. He is currently building and optimizing a nurse practitioner consult service in a 3-year collaboration between the Department of Emergency Medicine and Division of Geriatrics. Its mission is to create an age-friendly model of care in the emergency department utilizing nurse practitioners, social workers, case managers, and pharmacists. He maintains his role as a Clinical Professor at UCSF School of Nursing and is a consultant to the Los Angeles Dept of Health Services APP workforce. He completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at UCSF in 2022 focusing and publishing on medication self-management for older adults in the emergency department during medication reconciliation. He received the 2022/2023 American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Excellence in Advancing Nursing Practice award in recognition of his doctoral work. He is currently researching ED provider disposition decision-making and how a geriatric consultative service may be influential.
