0340_SHSO_ Inpatient Management of Buprenorphine in Opioid Use Disorder_Live
Description:
Misuse of opioids is linked to significant morbidity and mortality, and the incidence of misuse has been gradually increasing in recent years. Treatment options for opioid use disorder are limited. Historically, methadone, a full opioid agonist, was the sole choice for treating opioid use disorder. However, buprenorphine has gained popularity due to its partial agonism of opioid receptors, resulting in lower rates of respiratory depression and toxicity, thanks to its ceiling effect. Since buprenorphine is typically initiated on an outpatient basis, many inpatient healthcare providers may not be familiar with the management of buprenorphine when a patient is admitted. This program aims to provide education on buprenorphine and how to navigate specific scenarios related to its use in the inpatient setting.

After Attending this Activity, Learners Should be Able to:
1. Describe the unique pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of buprenorphine.
2. Summarize the implications of the MAT and MATE acts.
3. Recommend different dosing strategies for buprenorphine in opioid use disorder for specific populations and situations.
4. Discuss how to prevent or manage buprenorphine precipitated withdrawal.
5. Explain how to manage buprenorphine toxicity.
