Ajay Upadhyay
Dr. Ajay Upadhyay is the Program Director of the Adv GI MIS surgery fellowship since its inception in 2005. He is also the Medical Director of the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery and past Chair of the Robotic Steering Committee at the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. He specializes in HPB, Foregut and Bariatric Surgery. he is the current Chair of the CME Committee of the Summit Campus.
Dr. Upadhyay is an early adapter (starting in 2004) and pioneer of Robotic Surgery. He performs complex advance surgical procedures utilizing the daVinci Robotic system e.g. Whipple's pancreaticoduodenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, major hepatectomies, esophagectomy, gastrectomy, colectomies and bariatric surgery, having performed over 1300 hundred advanced robotic cases.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Delhi, New Delhi, India and subsequently trained in General Surgery in United Kingdom becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as well as the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. Dr. Upadhyay subsequently completed his post doctoral fellowship at UCSD, San Diego and Surgical Residency at New York hospital, New York & New York hospital, Queens.
Dr. Upadhyay is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of SAGES, AHPBA, SSAT, ASMBS, SSAT, Society of Robotic Surgery, Clinical Robotic Surgery Association and Association of Academic Surgery.
Dr. Upadhyay has been invited as an MIS & Robotic surgery faculty and has presented in multiple national and international meetings. He has also published extensively in peer reviewed journals.
