Steven Poser, Ph.D. has been practicing psychoanalysis in New York City for more than 25 years. He was a clinical intern at the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center from 1994-6 as psychotherapist on a locked ward of 40 chronically schizophrenic women. He was a faculty member, training analyst, supervisor, and chair of the research committee at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies in New York from 2001 until 2021. Since 2015 he has been a member of the bi-weekly faculty psychotherapy conference of the Department of Psychiatry, Mount Sinai Hospital. He is the author of The Misfit (2011), a psychological study of Marilyn Monroe and her treatment relationship with her last psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, and Though This Be Madness (2014), a study of the visionary American artist Forrest Bess. His review essay on the psychoanalytic treatment of schizophrenia appeared in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2016. In 2022 he completed This Is Me, Is That You? a memoir of his work with three chronically psychotic women he came to know in the course of his clinical internship. Also an accomplished visual artist, he has had numerous exhibitions of his work and maintains a studio in the Hudson Valley. He is a three-time Gradiva Award winner from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for his work both as an artist and curator.
